Our Pinecone Dresses feature a pretty pinecone pattern to the skirt which is complemented by moss stitch edgings and a sand‑stitch hemline for a textured finish. The picture shows the dresses knitted in cool, cotton double knitting wool, but you can substitute for any DK yarn for the changing seasons. The addition of a button opening at the back makes the dress easier to slip over your child’s head and with sizes to fit from newborn to 7 years old, you can opt for short sleeves or a sleeveless tunic.
Design: The dress has a pinecone design and a sand stitch hem. The front and back are knitted separately on straight needles and sewn together. Stitches are picked up for the neckband and button band at the back. You then have the option of either short sleeves which are knitted separately and sewn onto the dress or picking up stitches for a moss stitch armhole edge band.
Sizes: The pattern includes 6 sizes to fit child: 0-6 mths, 6-12 mths, 1-2 yrs, 2-3 yrs, 4-5 yrs and 6-7 years old
Yarn: The pattern uses cotton double knitting wool (an alternative yarn for overseas knitters would be USA light worsted or Australian 8 ply), but you can substitute for regular DK yarn.
The picture shows the outfit knitted using Rico Baby Cotton Soft DK in shade Mauve (048) for Short Sleeved Dress and Smokey Rose (047) for the Sleeveless Dress.
Skill: Intermediate. Written instructions provided.
Tension: 22 sts and 28 rows to 4 inches/10 cm (stocking stitch) on 4 mm needles or size needed to achieve stated tension.
Needles: Sizes 3.25 mm and 4.0 mm (USA 3 and 6) straight needles are required.
Other requirements:
3 (3, 3, 3, 4, 4) buttons for each dress
Stitch holders
