About the Knitting Pattern

The Polar Bear Hats feature a Fair Isle polar bear motif with a snowflake pattern above. The pattern includes two styles — a bobble hat topped with a pompom and a teabag hat finished with two pompoms.  Designed to fit children from 6 months to 7 years, both hats are knitted in double knitting (DK) wool.  The pattern is written in English and supplied as a digital download PDF.

Design Details

Both the Bobble Hat and Teabag Hat are knitted flat on straight needles. A chart is provided to complete the polar bear motif. The bear and snowflakes are created using the Fair Isle method, stranding the colour not in use at the back. Each bobble nose is knitted separately and sewn on, and the hats are finished with pompoms.

Sizes

Instructions include five sizes:

·       6–12 months

·       1–2 years

·       2–3 years

·       4–5 years

·       6–7 years

Skills Level

Intermediate. Written instructions are provided, but experience is needed in Fair Isle knitting and working from a chart for the motif.

Yarn

Double knitting (DK) wool required. Alternative equivalents: USA light worsted or Australian 8 ply.

Hats shown in the main image are knitted using:

• Sirdar Snuggly DK — Denim Blue (326) and White (251)

• Sirdar No. 1 — Charcoal (235)

Needles

3.25 mm and 4.0 mm (USA 3 and 6) straight needles
