Knit our Polar Bear Hats which feature two designs – a bobble hat topped with a pompom and a teabag hat with two pompoms. Both have a fair isle polar bear motif with a snowflake pattern above. Designed for children aged 6 months to 7 years, the hats are knitted in double knitting (DK) wool and worked flat on straight needles.
Design: The Bobble Hat and Teabag Hat are both knitted flat on straight needles and a chart is provided to complete the polar bear motif. The bear and snowflakes are created using the fair isle method stranding colour not in use at the back and the bobble noses for each bear are knitted separately and sewn on. Pompoms complete the hats.
Sizes: 5 sizes included to fit child: 6-12m, 1-2y, 2-3y, 4-5y and 6-7 years old.
Yarn: Double knitting wool required (an alternative yarn for overseas knitters would be USA light worsted or Australian 8 ply).
Hats shown in the main picture are for size 6-12 months and knitted using:
Sirdar Snuggly DK in shades: Denim Blue (326) and White (251)
Sirdar No. 1 in shade Charcoal (235).
Skill: Intermediate. Written instructions provided, but experience needed of fair isle knitting and working from a chart for the motif.
Tension: 22 sts and 30 rows to 4 inches/10 cm (stocking stitch) on 4 mm needles or size needed to achieve stated tension.
Needles: Sizes 3.25 mm and 4.0 mm (USA 3 and 6) straight needles are required.
