Knit our Christmas Penguins Cardigans, available in both V‑neck and round‑neck styles. Designed to fit children from 6 months to 7 years, this pattern uses double knitting (DK) wool and has rib edgings. The front has a motif of two delightful festive penguins — each wearing a Santa hat that children will adore.
Design: The cardigans have a motif of a cute penguin wearing a pompom Christmas hat on each side. The front, back and sleeves are knitted separately and sewn together. The ribbed buttonhole bands are added by picking up stitches and you may prefer to use a 3.25mm circular needle to help pick up and knit the stitches for the V-Neck Cardigan.
Sizes: The pattern gives instructions for 5 different sizes: 6-12 months, 1-2 years, 2-3 years, 4-5 years and 6-7 years old. To fit chest: 46, 51, 56, 61 and 66 cms or 18, 20, 22, 24 and 26 inches.
Yarn: The pattern uses double knitting wool (an alternative for overseas knitters would be USA light worsted or Australian 8 ply).
The picture shows the cardigans knitted using Sirdar Snuggly shades Pastel Blue (0321), White (0251), Black (0312) and Red (Flamenco 0242). Olympus DK yarn used for Yellow (853).
Skill: Intermediate. Written instructions provided, but experience needed to work from a chart for the motif.
Tension: 22 sts and 30 rows to 4 inches/10 cm (stocking stitch) on 4 mm needles or size needed to achieve stated tension.
Needles: Sizes 3.25 mm and 4.0 mm (USA 3 and 6) straight needles are required.
(optional) small crochet hook to help pull yarn through when making pompoms.
(optional) 3.25mm circular needle to help pick up and knit the stitches for the V-Neck Cardigan.
