Create our easy-to-knit Dotty Dresses, worked in double knitting wool and designed to suit ages from birth to 7 years old. The pattern includes two styles: a sleeveless pinafore and a short‑sleeved dress, sharing the same dotty textured pattern to the skirt. Both dresses are also finished with moss stitch edgings at the hem, armholes, and neckline.
The sleeveless version works perfectly as a lightweight summer dress or layered over a long‑sleeved top for cooler days. The short‑sleeved version offers a little extra warmth while keeping the same soft drape.
Design: The dresses have an easy-to-knit, repeat dotty pattern and a moss stitch hem. The front and back are knitted separately and sewn together. The moss stitch neckband is added by picking up stitches. You then have the option of either short sleeves which are knitted separately and sewn onto the dress or picking up stitches for a moss stitch armhole edge band.
Sizes: The pattern gives instructions for 6 different sizes: 0-6 months, 6-12 months, 1-2 years, 2-3 years, 4-5 years and 6-7 years old. To fit chest: 41, 46, 51, 56, 61 and 66 cms or 16, 18, 20, 22, 24 and 26 inches.
Yarn: The pattern uses double knitting wool (an alternative for overseas knitters would be USA light worsted or Australian 8 ply).
The picture shows the dresses knitted for size 6-12 months using Rico Baby Classic DK in shade Dusky Pink (040) for the Short Sleeved Dress and shade Powder (038) for the Sleeveless Dress.
Skill: Intermediate. Written instructions provided.
Tension: 22 sts and 28 rows to 4 inches/10 cm (stocking stitch) on 4 mm needles or size needed to achieve stated tension.
Needles: Sizes 3.25 mm and 4.0 mm (USA 3 and 6) straight needles are required.
