The Piper the Penguin Cardigan is designed to fit children aged 6 months to 7 years. Worked in double knitting (DK) wool, this round‑neck cardigan features two cheerful penguin motifs on the front, each with bright orange feet and beaks for a playful touch.
The cardigan is finished with rib edgings at the neckline, cuffs, and hem, and has a button fastening down the front for a classic, easy‑wear style.
Design: The front, back and sleeves are knitted separately and sewn together. The neckband and ribbed buttonhole bands are added by picking up stitches.
Sizes: Instructions for 5 different sizes: 6-12 months, 1-2 years, 2-3 years, 4-5 years and 6-7 years old. To fit chest: 46, 51, 56, 61 and 66 cms or 18, 20, 22, 24 and 26 inches.
Yarn: The pattern uses double knitting wool (an alternative for overseas knitters would be USA light worsted or Australian 8 ply).
Cardigan shown in main picture is knitted using Sirdar Snuggly DK in shades Denim Blue (326) and White (251) and Stylecraft Special DK in shades Black (1002) and Spice (1711).
Skill: Intermediate. Written instructions provided, but experience needed to work from a chart for the motif.
Tension: 22 sts and 30 rows to 4 inches/10 cm (stocking stitch) on 4 mm needles or size needed to achieve stated tension.
Needles: Sizes 3.25 mm and 4.0 mm (USA 3 and 6) straight needles are required.
